Programming Jobs

Another doom and gloom forecast from the Gartner Group. Most of it is pretty old. When I was graduating (1998), nearly half of engineering grads considered jobs in consulting and other non-tech areas.

What's more relevant is the fact that CS enrollment rates have dropped to 60% of 2000 level. McKinsey predicts a worldwide shortage in highly qualified engineers a few years down the road, as opposed to a surplus of accountants.

IMHO, the Gartner group is really doing the US a disservice. A few years down the road, Microsoft and Oracle will have trouble hiring all of the programmers that it needs and will have no choice but to look abroad.

Firefox profitable?

It turns out Firefox is making $30 million per year off google search box. Wonder how much they are getting from yahoo?
